graveyard shift rant
In which I rant. Sorry but the only thing more annoying than an individual trying to tell you not to like something is when it seems to be a social obligation to.
I don't want to sound like the first chapter of 13 Storeys but I don't get why people compulsively order me to dislike working from 11pm to 7am. It was a lovely shift & I miss it. Work never conflicted with anything, I just had to adjust when I slept. At its worst it was inefficient because somethings don't open until 9am which meant killing 2 hours.
I'd recommend it for anyone doing full time work, part time college. It was lovely to take night classes from 6pm to 9:30pm then have all night at work to digest the class while it was fresh. I could go right from work to morning classes too.
People seemed bothered that I was tired at most social occasions but I've never had the energy they wanted & at least work paid me to fake it. If I worked morning shift I would have been able to attend even fewer, there just would have been less understanding for being low energy in the afternoon even though it would have been right after a full shift.
Working graveyard means never being stuck in commute traffic because everyone is going the other way. You're most alert for the trip into work when its more dangerous since its night, and safe to be sleepy on your way home because you have the fewer people on the bus due to the direction but all the commute security measures. Plus for reasons I don't get, people are just less likely to bother you before noon, whether its an unwanted flirtation or a petition.
Yet you can't mention having worked those hours without someone bringing up circadian rhythm and the same tired stats. You know when my natural rhythm wants me active, when I have the most energy? 4 in the fucking morning. You can't get anything done at 4am, the only thing you can get at 4am is killed. Unless you have a night job, in which case you can get paid. Oh but isn't it dangerous being out that late? I wouldn't be out. I'd be at work with security patrols, easy to monitor entrances, and nothing to worry about defending other than myself. 4am your brain gets stuck on the idea of a robbery you rather be surrounded by things & people you care about, where the mere idea of someone entering in invited turns your stomach? Or in a booth under orders to be polite as you hand over the cash register and the only thing that would be hard or distressing to replace is your cell phone?
