Listening to Kevin and Ursula Eat Cheap and their guest keeps saying that all oatmeal is gluten free because its just oats. Which would be true if CROSS CONTAMINATION WEREN'T THE BANE OF MY FUCKING EXISTENCE.
( rant using oats to illustrate cross contamination risks )
Basically unless you maintain a chain from the farm to processor to factory to store to my table checking for contamination at each step then its not "gluten free" enough for celiacs, people with allergies, and others who need to know for very real health reasons. Oh and people who buy gluten free stuff for non health reasons, I don't understand you but thanks for increasing the demand so stores offer more GF stuff (and if you untrain my previously careful waiter by convincing him that the amount in sauces "isn't enough to make anyone sick" again I will hunt you down).
Oh and an article on gluten & oats for people who want an explanation instead of a rant.
