Edited to add: I just realized I never actually put my name and pronouns. I'm Magpie (they/them)! I am fine with nicknames as long its not something gendered like Maggie.

Feeling too catty for Bluesky where whining about this trope might be seen by someone who actually writes SF and I just want to bitch about people being stuck on the first level of implications after 20 years or more not make someone feel bad because they're one of the lucky 10k or they want a go at the toy even though a bunch of others have had their turn and are bored with it now.

I made a thread on Bluesky about a game idea a thread on Bluesky about a game idea that seems to be reasonably well liked and I want to play with it a bit more even if it's just an idea that would take a whole studio to actually pull off. I don't have the time or brain power to do this in a sensible manner so let's see how well dreamwidth handles me making a thread I edit throughout the day.

So mostly posting to say I'm still alive, relatively well, and haven't completely forgotten I have an account here. The more immediate reason is I'm still plugging away at my little website and just decided to start adding some Mesoamerican cultures to my timeline. I know we got the ultra condensed summary in school but there is something about adding in the Maya bar from 1000 BCE to 1521 CE and literally seeing how it dwarfs so many cultures I know more about. Debating whether to follow the rabbit hole and try to actually learn more about the Maya now even though my brain is heat fried or save the links I've found for a future date and get more cultures like the Inca in while I have the patience to wrestle the table into submission.

Yes I am aware there is undoubtedly a way actual programmers would make a table or an unholy abuse of a gannt chart that is less slogging than html tables, but this one I can work on in the notes app on my phone then paste in later if need be or any other device that has an internet connection. Besides last few ways I looked into either involved feeding all your info to a black box which wouldn't actually teach me anything &/or using google sheets; I'm feeling downright grumpy towards google atm. This hand typed nonsense also keeps me from getting too caught up in the presentation which is something I need all the help I can get on when this is 90% stubs by volume.

Tl;dr: Hey did you all know the Maya were around a really long time for any culture and that it's a gosh darn shame we were barely taught about them in school?

One of many bells that can never be unrung for me is learning how many people rank not feeling a 'negative emotion' over not risking harm to others. 'Masks remind me people are dying and that feels bad, so we should never see them even if masking reduces those deaths'

I posted it as a quote post of
Lee ([bsky.social profile] leer)'s post saying:
[Most articles where the author complains about Covid safety boil down to "I love thinking of myself as a compassionate person and the constant reminders that I am selfish are stressful."]

I expected at least 1 negative reaction as it passed out of my circle but it currently sits at 30 reposts and 94 likes with only people being nice. I know that isn't a lot for some people and that at least my neighborhood in Bluesky is pretty leftist, but maybe my fear of the internet turning on me if I attract any attention needs to be retuned or at least adjusted per site

On UBI

I'm trying to back up things worth saving from social media to some place I'll actually be able to find it again and I thought this thread I made on Blue Sky was worth posting here. Please forgive me for just copying & pasting instead of turning into a proper essay:

UBI is the best way I've seen to address the way poverty obeys the Laws of Holes: 1st law: if you are in a hole stop digging. A larger initial payment & knowing other payments are coming means people can put money on debts w/interest &/or fees so the situation quits getting worse. 1/🧵

2nd law: when you stop digging, you are still in a hole. Keep the payments coming because stopping the spiral making things worse every month is not the same as getting out of debt or addressing what led to getting in debt in the first place 2/🧵

3rd law of holes: If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging, come out of it, and then fill it in to keep it from becoming a hazard. Be clear how long the payments are coming so they know they can invest in education, equipment, etc, so they can stop falling into debt 3/🧵

The 4th Law of Holes — If you don’t know that you are in a hole, ask someone who isn’t covered with mud and standing in the shade. A bit of a stretch but bear with me: they need help from someone who isn't in the hole themselves and which doesn't shame them for not already being out of it 4/🧵

I know there is something about how obvious it is that makes it hard for people to accept that the best way to address poverty is to give people judgment free money and keep giving it reliably, but it really is that simple. 5/🧵

Being as clear and reliable about the payments as possible so the recipients know they can make plans around how much is coming, when, and for how long; is what shifts it from a windfall to a real investment. Windfalls are great, but they can't risk a big long-term change on a 1 time thing. 6/🧵

The theory has been worked out thoroughly; the pilots have been run to great success over & over; at some point we need to quit treating it as a novel idea and just give people money that they can count on, without a bunch of hoops or restrictions. End/🧵

PS: the rules of holes have been passed around the internet so other than the 1st two rules, they vary in order wording, etc so I can't give you just 1 source, as I picked from a number of pages but https://meandray.com/2019/03/07/the-laws-of-holes/ is one of the main pages I used

So I was getting some pictures for my site when I saw the line IIIF Manifest, and fell down a rabbit hole.

So I am making a series of timelines on my website in order to get some kind of grasp on history. This damn thing has scope creeped into being 90% of the time I spend working on the site for ages now, so its really not surprising when I realized that I'll at minimum need another page with a whole different kind of timeline, this led to me needing to rant. Nay not just rant but have a series of rant tangents that I am trying to sort out here bc my brain started whistling like a teapot.

background )
So I googled making timeline sites and thats where the rants started building up. Lets start with Timeline JS being recommended by every 3rd listicle:
rant about Timeline JS )
The other recs at least tend to be actual code snippets where you can see what they're doing but half of what they are doing is (at best) gilding the lily: overloading it with bells & whistles and only considering what you'd think would be obvious functionality questions like "can you put pictures in it? hows about video?" as an afterthought.

Put down the javascript! )
I should really not be surprised that after all that I ended up with the WC3 schools template which appears to use divs in ways that go against semantic HTML but looks it won't break if I put in a Youtube embed which, you know was the entire thing I needed it for in the first place. All that nonsense in the other ones, this is two kinds of divs (right, left), a bit of style so it looks good and if the screen is small they flop over to be on the same side of the actual line of the timeline. Only fun bit is going to be figuring out how to handle linking each event to the main timeline page with all the spans. On the plus side feeling validated in my decision to just do it in tables in the first place, seeing as most of the options barely work for showing time spans like the length of an empire and are only really for individual events. Oh and this will buy me some time before I decide if I need to break this timeline into at least 3 because its getting so thick.
shy_magpie: A Magpie (Default)
Been working on a universal timeline bc I have a really poor sense of how it all fits together.
rambling intro )

What I hadn’t expected (and this is probably just because of how I'm doing it) is that it leaves a very ADHD impression of things.

Thanks to [personal profile] conuly for sharing a link to this article on recycling solar panels. Hopefully such efforts will decrease how much is sent to the landfill and how much material needs to get mined/manufactured.

I've been dragging the past couple weeks and have now reached the point that my brain is misprocessing things it sees in addition to my usual hearing the wrong word perfectly clearly. Only my anxiety is more under control than usual so instead of flying mice, half the things I see at head height out of the corner of my eye are someone lounging against a wall. Its not unlike being haunted by a ghost terribly worried about being accused of trying to hard

[syndicated profile] ao3_news_feed posted: 2023 Voters - Check Your Email for Voting Instructions

As I understand it, since the number of seats matches the number of candidates, the votes is to determine who gets seated for a full term versus takes over a partial term. So if you can vote, then vote to seat the best people to serve for the longest term. AO3 is a big ship and while its set up so no one board member can make sweeping changes, its going to take a lot of good people working for a while to get it back on the right course.

Very disappointed in AO3, they turn out to be more racist and in more ways than I knew about. I am trying to hold on to hope that it can be changed now that this stuff is getting more public. Read more... )

So last few times I played with making my own site, I did like I was taught and got some organization & templates in place first then worked on content. So I have about 4 layers of old versions of the site that are pretty and the templates out number the stubs for things I was going to write later which out number the actually written bits. My ADHD usually hit around the time I knew what bits would go where & more or less what it would look like. I get down to a cache of actual content from 2017ish and apparently that predates my having any actual classes in webdesign.

I thought I was just going to cut & paste it into the new template. Instead I am sitting wondering how it has three h1s, if I had closed a paragraph tag in my life, and whether those br/s ever made sense or if they were seriously based on the size of my monitor at the time. I suppose I should be grateful that I haven't found the fandom site I made in middle school that predates CSS and used invisible tables for formatting.

In theory I am getting better at being kind about my past self and forgiving what I didn’t know. I practice the best I have is "for winging it off the cheapest second hand books I could find, its kinda impressive I was able to get something that appeared more competent then it was"
shy_magpie: Black box with white text reading <html> </html> (HTML)
So I am once again working on a little website of mine own; partially bc its a free hobby, partially out of a vague philosophical sense that everyone who can should have a little corner of the web that isn't social media and is just theirs. Its going better and worse than expected. On the one hand I flat can't decipher what half the CSS does anymore, on the other I am able to get back into the right mode of thinking much faster than expected. So getting the stubs up and preparing to dig through to see how much of the actual content of the old versions can be poured into the new template vs what needs to be completely rewritten. At some point I'll get back into the swing of thing, completely rewrite the template and have to move everything again. At another point I'll probably decide I should have relearned SASS before doing this to begin with then have to go all the way back to square one, but if I call it iteration I can pretend its a deliberate part of the process. Short term I just have to get things in some kind of structure and get my government name off things bc I made huge chunks of this in college before I realized I was never going to do the degree to office job thing.

back ish

Going to try to remember this site exists more, and am trying to at least hit my reading page a couple times a fortnight. Looks like more people I know from elsewhere might be coming with so many other sites in turmoil. I was honestly debating nuking the account & acting like I just wandered in bc I remember getting pretty personal here before I remembered you can actually control who sees what. So don't be alarmed if there are changes to my old stuff or take it personally if you can't see something you used to be able to. Relearning how to do this is likely to cause gliches as I get a hang of it

Hi hope nobody minds but I have a head canon or at least a possible interpretation of The Magnus Archives, that I want to get down but don't want to share with people who will see it as a TMA post first & a post by me second. For starters I'm not up to date & posting in part to try to re engage with the series. TMA spoilers under the cut.

Don't mind me just figured out my taste in genre fiction has more to do with my anxiety & rank hang ups than going watching Beauty & The Beast at an impressionable age.

In which I rant. Sorry but the only thing more annoying than an individual trying to tell you not to like something is when it seems to be a social obligation to.
