I went back and added icons for each type of post I make; a radio for podcast related; a typewriter for fanfic related; etc.; That way you can tell at a glance what kind of post it is. Am I adding too many bells and whistles? Would you folks prefer I stuck to my magpie so its easy to tell who I am on the reading page? Is the concept ok but my taste in images sucks?

I think it's a cute idea!

Sounds like you're way more organized than me when it comes to icons, haha. I just hit randomize and post.

That is the way I use my icons; emotionally more than instrumental, but same sort of "I'm signally something".

I'll not-vary if I'm specifically conversing with someone that prefers more consistency.

Thematic icons is 100% appropriate for the medium! Because DW doesn't have a reblogging function it's not difficult to tell who posts what.

There are some people who prefer consistency, and some paid users who use their full icon set in high frequency rotation might cause problems? But honestly I think the only people posting often enough to be confusing are RPers, and RP comms have their own norms for icon use.

Back in the LJ heyday ‘several people with very similar icons’ used to regularly confuse me, but not on my own reading list, more often in community discussions.

Sounds good. I tend to use mine more for emotional / subject cues, but let's be honest, Rodney here is definitely my reasing/writing icon.
